Aloe Vera Polysaccharides and Their Measurement

The IASC Certification Tests remain the bulwark protecting consumers and consumer product manufacturers from misrepresention and fraud of Aloe Vera products. A test (alcohol precipitable solids) has been promoted which purports to measure Aloe polysaccharides. Not only does this test fail to quantitate Aloe Vera polysaccharides but its use has facilitated misrepresentation, mislabelling and fraud in the Aloe Industry. The simplest, cheapest assay of polysaccharide for Aloe Vera is the alcohol precipitable hexose test. Using this test it is possible to establish a normal range for polysaccharide in reference Aloe Vera barbadensis gel Standard Sample statistical samples and to determine the range for polysaccharide content in authentic commercial Aloe Vera powder materials. The test, in conjunction with the IASC Certification Tests has utility for the detection of maltodextrin in the adulteration, mislabelling and fraudulent misrepresentation of Aloe. The test has been verified in independent testing lab studies involving double blind testing and is cross verified by HPLC fingerprint tests using reference materials.
